“There are few moments where we have the opportunity to win a battle against our own vanity in a medium that encourages constant self-promotion. The restraint of not using a real photo for an avatar even though I am EXCEEDINGLY BEAUTIFUL is a similar one of my monastic vows. To deny the indulgence of verification is a small gesture which holds religious meaning to me. We should not ask to be rewarded for our good deeds tweets in this life; we must have faith that God has boundless favs and RTs awaiting us in Heaven.”
It’s one thing to “deny the indulgence” of something in the interest of personal integrity, but that integrity is lost the moment you brag about it. Restraint in itself is a form of vanity unless it’s kept to the person who’s restraining themselves.
This week’s cover of TIME focuses on the millennial generation, or as cover story author Joel Stein calls them, ‘The New Greatest Generation.’

Re: “Why they’ll save us all”
I hope the full version of this story reveals that we’re all getting super-powers like they did on Heroes.
“This Is Water” Is the Most Inspirational Thing You’ll See Today
Reblogging this in the hopes that I’ll never have to explain my tattoo again.
This is really well made. If you haven’t heard the entire DFW commencement address, check that out, here.
Guys, I going to be doing a lot of Tumblings on the new Dog and Pony Show which is based right here on Tumblr.

Re: The CICADAPOCALYPSE
Here’s to hoping that the media is being just as sensational about the east coast’s upcoming cicadapocalypse as they are about everything else.
Watch the full video on The Weather Channel’s website.
Also, lol at this being on TWC. “Today’s forecast calls for BILLIONS OF FUCKING CICADAS”
Sigh. I’m scared.
BILLIONS
Welcome to DAPS v7
“It’s been a long time, long time, we shouldn’t have left you, left you, without a dope beat to step to, step to, step to, step to Step to, step to” - Timbaland
Hey guys! Welcome to the newest (read: 7th) version of Dog and Pony Show! We’re really excited about this new theme, mostly because it’s our first powered entirely by Tumblr. So, now you get all of your favorite DAPS content, but now you’ll be able to reblog and favorite our posts.
From here on out, DAPS.tv will bring you to our Tumblr account. This post marks a transition from the throwaway posts that we had been posting, into the full length DAPS that our long-time readers know and love.
If you’re reading this on the Tumblr dash, you can check out the pretty new theme, here. I suggest you do, it’s pretty.
If you’re reading this because this post has been reblogged into your dash, then we think you’re swell and think you should follow us! We’re going to be bringing you interesting stuff that we find on the internets usually digested and spit out with our unique brand of commentary.
If you’re not a “Tumblr Person,” whatever that means, don’t worry. You’ll still be able to read all the DAPS that your little heart’s desire.
You might be wondering where all of the old posts are. Well, we’re creating a “DAPS legacy” page where all of that content will live. That’s going to be live tomorrow or Wednesday. We’ll link you guys when that goes live.
Our DAPScasts, however, are all now available on SoundCloud. You can download them, here.
Because this is Tumblr powered, you can now submit content and ask us questions. We strongly suggest that we do, we love you all and want to read your pretty words.
That’s pretty much it. Hope you guys like it, we worked really hard on this move.
We’d appreciate it if you shared (reblogged) this post with (to) your friends, telling them to follow us. You can use your own adjectives to explain why. We trust you.
DAPS IS NOW 100% Tumblr powered!

The smart thing to say, I think, is that the way out of this bind is to work your way somehow back to your original motivation — fun. And, if you can find your way back to fun, you will find that the hideously unfortunate double-bind of the late vain period turns out really to have been good luck for you. Because the fun you work back to has been transfigured by the extreme unpleasantness of vanity and fear, an unpleasantness you’re now so anxious to avoid that the fun you rediscover is a way fuller and more large-hearted kind of fun. It has something to do with Work as Play.
I think about this struggle a lot. The idea of creativity for creativity’s sake vs. the idea of cultivating an audience. He has a really interesting take on it.
Now I need to read every non-fiction essay that David Foster Wallace has ever written.
